Right now, I’m writing this on our US holiday of Memorial Day, which is supposed to be a day we honor those who have given their lives in service to their country. (Not to be confused with Veterans Day, where we honor the living who have and continue to risk those lives.)
Here in the US this long holiday weekend is also considered by many as the start of Summertime.
It’s a holiday, and we’ve still had our weekly Onyx Path Meetings, and I’m writing this blog, because that’s what we do. No rest for the wicked.
I’m actually pointing this out not as a cheap ploy for pity, “Aw, you poor Onyx Path team. You have to work on a holiday…”, but to illustrate the nature of how we do what we do. Back in the day, at White Wolf, I was famous (infamous) for completely not noticing that we had a national holiday. I’d expect the full-time crew to be in the office, and make plans like they would be, only to be reminded that nope, nobody was coming in.
Not because I was a cruel taskmaster, although I’m sure there were plenty of folks who did think that, but because I’ve never stopped thinking like a freelancer.
To a freelancer, an official holiday just means another “extra” day to get more projects worked on.
Maybe you can trot downstairs from your studio, or writing sanctum, and grab a burger and say hi to a few folks, but then it’s back to the project. That was my life for years before I got to WW, and now, running Onyx Path, I’ve just eased right back into that kind of thinking. The great thing is, everybody at Onyx Path right now has recently, or is right now, a freelancer. So the idea that we’d have a meeting on a national holiday is not at all strange.
I’ve found my people!
Also, in the same area of thinking, and so I cover all the bases with this, being able to choose when to work on what (or on a holiday), is one of the things I wanted out of Onyx Path Publishing when I first considered starting my own company. You can certainly overwork that way, and just be doing projects all the time. After all, these are amazingly cool projects we’re talking about here.
But, what I prefer for myself, our Onyx Path crew, and gang of freelance creators we have the pleasure to work with, is having the flexibility to make our own decisions on what we work on when. I want to work on this cool project, but it needs to get done now, so I work all night and this holiday. But I also take Wednesday off to spend the day walking through college registration with one of my kids.
It’s a question of balance and how to achieve it, and the way we are doing it now, with Onyx Path, is the closest I’ve seen in practice since, well, ever. Which is kind of why I bring up the whole thing. There’s a pretty big difference in how we’re doing things if you’re imagining Onyx is put together like a 9-5 business.
Anyway, I’ve got this blog to finish, and one of the Scarred Lands 2nd adventure covers to finish illustrating.
If you’re also working; work well. If you’re enjoying a day off; have a great one!
BLURBS!

This is your tale. This is Exalted. What legends will they tell of your deeds?
Exalted 3rd Edition depicts both a revitalized and expanded Creation, and the triumphant return of the Solar Exalted—but whether their rebirth will herald the salvation or destruction of the world, none can say. The system redesign takes the best parts of the previous editions and streamlines the mechanics for maximum playability.
Exalted 3rd Edition includes:
- New Fiction – Read a new tale by original Exalted developer and author Geoff Grabowski.
- New Artwork – See the Realm in a new light with stunning artwork by both new and classic Exalted artists working under the direction of Maria Cabardo.
- Expanded Locales – Expand your campaigns with a detailed overview of the sprawling and decadent Second Age of Man. In addition to classic locales such as Chiaroscuro and Nexus, find many new locations not detailed in previous editions, from the treacherous intrigues of Port Calin to the proud warriors of the frigid plains and forests of Medo, held in check only by the iron hand of the Realm.
- Intrigue and Mystery – Discover a revitalized Realm, still standing at the brink of civil war, but more dangerous than ever before; and the Lunar dominions which harry its borders, seeking redress for ancient crimes while pursuing modern ambitions.
- Expanded Character Creation – Create and play Solar Exalted characters and compelling mortal heroes with more information and fleshed out details.
- Combat System – Fight with a new cinematic combat engine, primed to deliver dynamic, exciting, and easily resolved battles between heroes, gods, and armies.
- Charms – Explore a vibrant new Charm set encompassing both classic Solar powers from previous editions and all-new powers to shift the course of Creation.
- …and much, much more!

TODAY’S REASON TO DRINK: To all of our fallen!
A couple of questions. The schedule states that V20 Ghouls & Revenants is to get a Deluxe Edition Kickstarter. Is that still happening? Second, could you please enable PayPal as a payment option for Changeling 20th preorders on Backerkit? Thanks!
No, Ghouls will not have a Kickstarter. I will check with BK as to their set-up.
Here is a link for setting up PayPal on Backerkit: http://help.backerkit.com/article/351-paying-with-paypal
Will there be a Wraith Backerkit preorder option for us late-birds, like the one you set up for Changeling?
Sorry, no. We are already further along in the back-end of Wr20’s KS than would make sense to add BK.
Oh well, thanks anyway
I’ve mentioned this elsewhere, but is there any chance of Onyx Path recording their panels at Gen Con this year? I’m not gonna be able to make it out to the show but am very curious to hear the plans for everything going forward, and having the actual audio saves us from the inevitable nightmare of hearsay that usually follows.
We will try a couple of different methods this year to record panels, but you should expect the hearsay and speculation anyway. 🙂
Really excited to see Ghouls coming, as Revenants are one of my favorite things. Also excited for the PoD of Black Hand as that’s another of my favorite things (are we seeing a theme here?).
Is the current plan still for Beckett to be the next KS? And any idea around when that might be starting?
Yes, we are still planning on Beckett’s Jyhad Diary as our next KS. I’d prefer it to launch mid-June, but we’ll see if we get all the pieces together by then. Thanks!
It shows character working on a holiday, but still recognizing the fact.
I am dying (hahaha) waiting for Wraith20…
Curses be damned.
It’s ok. I guess. We have all the time in stygia, after all…
Just because I am a character, doesn’t mean I have character. RichD is getting closer and closer to finishing the Wraith 20 text, it’s coming.
I’m mildly impatient: any idea when Awakening will be available as POD on Drivethru?
In a few months, thanks!
The full-size preview document doesn’t work at Drivethrurpg and Rpgnow for Dark Eras.
This might sound odd, but did anyone also get an e-mail about a completely different Monday Meeting from two weeks before GenCon 2015? Cause I’d like to know if I need to get a priest and throw some holy water at my computer to get the demons out.
Yeah, minor glitch. I know why it went, but unfortunately you can’t unring a bell. No way to un-send the emails.
Probably a good idea no matter what Ian says.
Loving the Chronicles of Darkness 2nd edition materials released so far :). Any chance Promethean 2nd edition will be out before June’s end?
Crazier things have happened.
I’m hoping things get crazy. I want to read this on the plane to Africa in July! Secrets of the Covanents too!
Your lips, god’s ears.
So we have a rough idea on when we can expect some of those ex3 titles to move from 2nd draft? My group is going full throttle with ex3….brilliant reworking!! Our Dawn just heard about Arms and won’t shut up now lol
where is W20 Kinfolk on the list ? as im not seeing it atm.
Odd… it should be moving into the layout category this week.
Will the Ex3 Backer charms go straight on sale after WWP approval, or will there be any further stages?
Also do WWP have any seperate employees, or is it someone in charge of IP management at Paradox calling the shots?
White Wolf is a separate company. Tobias Sjögren is CEO of White Wolf, with Martin Ericcson (V20’s Dracula, in this site’s background image over at the left) as Lead Storyteller. There are at least three other employees I know of.
I can’t wait for Mage PoD! I’ll be snatching it up with the Demon Storyteller’s Guide in one go.
So… given that Secrets of the Covenants was first announced at GenCon 2011 as a May 2012 release, it would be oddly apropos in a full-circle kind of way if it landed as a GenCon 2016 release. 🙂
Yes, Secrets was one of our first ideas for new VtR books and it evolved along with the idea of Requiem 2nd; at each shift from Stryx Chronicles to 2nd it was swept along with it.
