Once More, with Future! [Monday Meeting Notes]

So, that title really refers to two things- the Once and Future book for Scion which has held the number one spot on DTRPG for almost two weeks, and all of us being here in the first couple of days of 2024 and looking at what the next year might hold!

I mean, here’s a screenshot from this afternoon, in case we dropped out of first as I wrote all this:

We don’t generally pound these drums quite so hard with our releases as we are always racing to the next one – we’ve had a release every Wednesday going back a decade or so – but with so many TTRPGs rolling out we’ve been considering a lot of ways to get more signal out into the noise.

Particularly since this is a hellagood supplement for Scion 2e that really does a great job of taking what we know of Arthur and company (and what one of us knows is generally different than somebody else if only because there are just so many possible “original sources” as well as so many interpretations of the legends surrounding Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table) and giving us playable and appropriate options for them.

For example, the book presents the “Mantle of Arthur” as an elegant in-game method of resolving all those different versions of Arthur, etc, and thereby gives your table the chance to use whichever bits of the legends and stories you like.

Then, add in the most up-to-date scholarship as to the Welsh Pantheon, which could be used as deep backstory for a lot of the Arthur stories, but doesn’t have to be, and there is a ton of fantastic material to both read and play here. Kudos to the whole team!

Here are two graphics representing those two aspects of the book:

Our 13th January 2nd

Yep, here we are entering our 13th year of doing business. That’s a fine number, and my lucky one! Hopefully, this year will be really lucky for Onyx Path, too!

Certainly, it suggests some kind of scary stuff too, which could be appropriate indeed this year.

Speaking of looking forward into the new year…here’s what our Monday Meeting crew is looking forward to this year, at least in terms of what they do with Onyx Path:

Mirthful Mike mumbles menacingly:

What I am looking forward to in 2024:

  • Several crowdfunding projects wrapping and hitting Drivethru (and retail).
  • Our print pipeline finally being ahead of the curve by this summer.
  • The limited edition version of The World Below… as it will be utterly badass.
  • Roll out of the non KS related Aberrant and Scion projects over the course of the year.

Dixie deliberates delightfully:

I can’t wait to see the first Storypath Ultra games rolling out, and I really can’t wait for everyone to see Curious Cats of Mau, as the team behind it was wonderful and passionate. Past that, I hope to attend more physical conventions this year and I always look forward to OPP Con, too!

Also, we’re about to hit episode 300 of the Pathcast in a few weeks, and we generally do some fun stuff for those milestones.

LisaT laughs:

I’m looking forward to my 9th year with OPP. Will it bring changes, challenges, more of the same? This is where the fun lies!

Matthew mentions many meandering motifs:

The thing I’m most looking forward to in 2024 is – somewhat masochistically – running even more games. I’ve got a lot of upcoming projects I’m looking forward to developing and writing, but more than that, I can’t wait to run some of them to full campaign length. I’m running a Scion campaign that’s reached Hero Tier, and the only way is up from there. I’m intending on delving equally deep with my game of The World Below. Running and playing games are some of the best sources of inspiration I get for my work, and luckily, I enjoy doing both!

Impish Ian intones informally:

I’m really looking forward to everything we’re going to show you this year. Fulfilling existing projects, lots of fun new supplements, new announcements, it should hopefully be a good time!

Danielle dashes in to deliriously declaim:

There’s so much to look forward to this year. I can’t wait to share At the Gates and the Storypath Ultra rulebook with everyone, and so many of our previously crowdfunded projects are coming to fruition this year. I especially looking forward to Onyx Path Con, and showing off some more Storypath Ultra games!

While Eddy exclaims excitedly:

What I’m looking forward to in 2024 are all the new games! The World Below just got funded, At the Gates is chomping/champing at the bit for the world to see, and people will start getting hands on games we funded in 2022 and 2023. We love our established games, obviously, but there’s something really special about seeing a brand new world be born into the world. 2024 is going to be amazing!

Travis takes time to talk Twitch:

As our established settings continue to grow and we roll out new settings like At The Gates and The World Below, I look forward to showcasing new material on Twitch! I’m also excited beyond words to see things I’ve worked on in the past couple years coming to full fruition! I’m excited to see what gets released this year both as a creator and as a fan!

Finally, your faithful founder fumbles feverishly for fantastic forecasts:

We’ve been setting up a lot of changes here all through the last year: new game lines and two new systems with Storypath Ultra and Onyx20, new printer relationships to get you all our traditionally printed and deluxe books, new VTT relationships, and more outreach into our community. More attendance at various in-person cons, and continued programming at various online cons including our own.

At the same time, we’ve been catching up on so many of our projects that folks have been clamoring for, and have been building up momentum all year.

All of that aims us towards what might be our most exciting year yet as we use all that foundational building and rebuilding to stretch ourselves in some new fresh ways with the sorts of games and art we can create, and also return to formats and genres we’ve pulled back from these last years.

Oh yeah, I’m really looking forward to showing you all what we’re going to do!

Hope everybody had a great new year, stayed safe, and had fun! It’s 2024, let’s get right at these:

MEDIA HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK:

An odd thing happened when I went to record the Onyx Path News today. As soon as I clicked onto YouTube, I received an email saying:

“Deny them. Make them wait. Make them hungry.”

No idea what that meant, but I clicked to record and I received another email, this time appearing scrambled. My power then went out, and that’s the state in which it has remained.

So no Onyx Path News today, I guess! You’ll have to go hungry.

Redlines

Tasty Bit – Æon: Large Scale Space Combat (February)

Manuscript Approval

TC Aegis – Aegis Atlas

  • Eddy: Lauren has also turned around the stretch goal book for Trinity Continuum: Aegis! That’s off to the appropriate people for approval.

Post-Editing Development

Scion – Scion: God Player’s Guide

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!

Going with the heart on this one folks: today happens to be the birthday of my granddaughter! She’s only in preschool but still thinks she knows a good drawing better than I do – which is why she scribbles all over any drawing I do for her! Critics.

  1. With those spiffy new graphics for Once and Future I must once again beg you to update your Redbubble store with the Pantheon symbols that came in the Companion, Demigod, Dragon, and even Mythos. And well, Once and Future as well as God when available! I wanna buy more t-shirts!

    • We’ll see what we can do. Our focus has been on pushing for gameplay oriented releases as much as possible all last year, but a few more shirts wouldn’t hurt!

  2. Any chance Scion or Trinity Continuum could move to Demiplane this year? I much prefer Demiplane’s format where you read the game directly on their website to DTRPG’s format where you have to download the games to your phone.

    • There’s always a chance. Getting official VTT support on any venue is often very much more involved and complicated than fan-built material, so we have a bit more to do than just tossing something up there – but it’s not out of the question. Tjanks!

  3. Could Ex: Essence backers get access to an art free preview script of Pillars of Creation?

It would really help keeping Essence games going not to mention the information on the Lintha and all the new game possibilities that will bring.

Pretty please with the sugar on top…

    • We’ll discuss it in-house, but please do bear in mind that the text released during our crowdfunding campaigns is set into a process that allows for just such an early reveal. Any other project has to be pulled out of the production process to accommodate showing the text early, which tends to disrupt getting the actual book to a release. Thanks!
