Kind of feel like our vampiric character pictured above in the Prince’s Gambit Intrigue deck. Crawlin’ through some tough times to get here. But HERE is quite excellent actually.
First, our first foray into Kickstarting a card game is going gangbusters, with our Prince’s Gambit KS funding goal met in the first few hours, and our backers jumping our pledge totals past several Stretch Goals that add to the deck already. There have also been some great ideas talked about for game rules variants: everything from adding rules for Anarchs and the Inconnu to rules for fewer or more players.
Because backers can download the card PDFs and rulebook, we’ve also been getting folks telling us how much fun they’ve been having maneuvering through the Intrigues and trying to discover who’s Sabbat. Which is always so great to hear! You never know if players will enjoy the game as much as you did creating it.
If you haven’t checked it out, please do, and if you like it: spread the word. With this being our first card game, we don’t have as much of a voice in card games circles, so any help letting folks know could be huge for the game!
Also, like I mentioned last week: weβll be holding an Ask Me (Us) Anything on Reddit this Wednesday the 29th starting around 12 noon EDT. Various developers and Onyx Path folks will be on throughout the day, and Justin Achilli will pop on in the evening after he gets done his day job to talk about Princeβs Gambit. So if you want all the inside info, thatβs the place to go next week!
Just want to emphasize that this is not just for Prince’s Gambit, so we’ll answer about anything!
If you can’t make it, feel free to leave any questions you’d like us to ask during the AMA session right here in the comments.
For those who have asked: we are doing something very special for April Fool’s Day. The only thing I can say, quoting Eddy Webb, is that “On Saturday, discover the latest reason why we fired Neall!”
Which leads us nicely into a decently big chunk of information for folks concerned about Exalted 3rd Edition as a continuing game line. For weeks I’ve been mentioning that we’ve been working very diligently on putting together a plan for how we’re going to handle EX3‘s releases.
(Seriously, this is a long one).
First off, I’m incredibly happy to announce that Eric Minton and Robert Vance have agreed to become the new developers for Exalted 3rd Edition. Eric and Robert have been all over EX3 in various capacities since writing began, and their involvement and love of Exalted goes further back than that.
(I’m not even sure why I’m introducing them, actually, since our long-time community knows these guys so well).
With their help, we have put together a schedule for releases that starts with getting the Exalted 3rd Jumpstart: Tomb of Dreams out to backers as soon as we can get the finished layout approved by the new White Wolf.
Next, they are finishing up Arms of the Chosen, and we expect to have the Advance PDF ready in three months.
They are also in the process of assigning the remaining writing that needs to be done on the Dragon Blooded and The Realm books. Most of the writing for both books has been completed, so once they get used to our process for hiring writers and contracting and all that, we can nail down expectations on when the text will be done. Which is really important, because we won’t be Kickstarting Dragon Blooded until the text is completely finished.
After a lot of discussion, and a fair bit of soul-searching, we’ve decided that the next two books will be Exigents and Lunars. We love a lot of the books proposed on previous schedules, and think they would really expand and enrich EX3, but we have to start getting our Exalted community the projects they need to play NOW (or close to NOW), rather than multiple years from now.
But even with Eric and Robert revved up and excited to deliver the projects I mention above, we can’t deliver these projects backwards through time. And these new devs need to learn their new jobs.
The remaining Kickstarter Rewards will be coming out in the months to come, with Matt Forbeck telling us that his novel’s finished drafts are on their way, and Aaron Rosenberg hammering away at his novel. The EX3 Essays book is being outlined and writers are being contacted, and composer James Semple has all but one of the Exalted character themes finished. He then has to create the “adventure themes” part of the EX3 Music Suites, but needed to figure out the the character themes so he could include parts of them in the adventure themes.
I’m not a musician, so I’ll have to take his word on the process.
So what we have planned are two projects that we are going to start releasing in April. That’s right, in order to provide our community with playable material now and not waiting until the Arms of the Chosen Advance PDF is released three months from now, we’re going to be releasing a section of each book each month as PDFs.
The first book, EX3: Antagonists, will feature both individual NPCs as well as antagonist groups. Each section will be smaller than a chapter, and we’ll be combining them all together as a PDF and PoD book after we have made a good number of them available monthly.
The second book will be the EX3 Bestiary, and will features creatures of all power levels. Some will be creatures the writers of the core had to hold back on, and others will be new and determined by what gaps we see from the core book that this project can fill. We’ll release these in monthly sections that we’ll combine at some point into a book, as well.
Rather than adding projects to the new devs’ already intimidating plate, both these books will be spearheaded by writers familiar with EX3, and reviewed by Eric and Robert. (Also, both books need to be approved by the new White Wolf Publishing before we officially can go ahead with them.)
Finally, our new devs will be making themselves regularly available on the Onyx Path Exalted forum, and will be releasing excerpts and development notes and text on a regular basis. In fact, here is an excerpt from Arms of the Chosen, and in April we’ll have a look at the Dragon Blooded charms:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/15xddoahzedtkwu/Arms%20of%20the%20Chosen%20Preview.docx?dl=0
Obviously, this whole message hasn’t delved into the nitty-gritty of what brought us here, and we really don’t intend to. Instead, we are celebrating a new team of creators, as well as the monumental work that John Morke and Holden Shearer were able to accomplish through some incredibly grueling times for them personally. What glories the future holds!
BLURBS!

Continuing our individual Dark Eras chapters, we offer you Dark Eras: Fallen Blossoms on in PDF and physical copy PoD versions on DTRPG! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/205483/Dark-Eras-Fallen-Blossoms-Hunter-the-Vigil
From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Doubting Souls (Hunter 1690-1695 Salem). Immigrants and tribes struggled to co-exist on the Eastern Seaboard in the ever-expanding Colonies. Violent clashes, supernatural beliefs, and demonic influences spelled disaster for Salem Village and its surrounding towns, while others fought werewolves and vampires on the frontier. With so much at risk, only god-fearing men and women were deemed innocent β and those were few indeed.

From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: The Bowery Dogs (Werewolf 1969-1979 NYC). New York City in the 1970s. Crime. Drugs. Gang violence. Vast economic disparity. And werewolves. Itβs a lean, ugly time to be alive, and the lone wolf doesnβt stand a chance out there. In the end, all you really have is family.

The Locker is open; the Chronicles of Darkness: Hurt Locker, that is! PDF and physical copy PoDs are now available on DTRPG! http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/199275/Chronicles-of-Darkness-Hurt-Locker
Hurt Locker features:
- Treatment of violence in the Chronicles of Darkness. Lasting trauma, scene framing, and other tools for making your stories hurt.
- Many new player options, including Merits, supernatural knacks, and even new character types like psychic vampires and sleeper cell soldiers.
- Expanded equipment and equipment rules.
Hurt Locker requires the Chronicles of Darkness Rulebook or any other standalone Chronicles of Darkness rulebook such as Vampire: The Requiem, Werewolf: The Forsaken, or Beast: The Primordial to use.
From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: Ruins of Empire (Mummy 1893-1924). Perhaps the quintessential era of the mummy in the minds of Westerners, this period saw the decline of the two greatest empires of the age: British and Ottoman. Walk with the Arisen as they bear witness to the death of the Victorian age, to pivotal mortal discoveries in Egypt, and to the horrors of the Great War.
Available in PDF and physical copy PoD versions on DTRPG. http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/178801/Dark-Eras-Ruins-of-Empire-Mummy-the-Curse
From the massive Chronicles of Darkness: Dark Eras main book, we have pulled this single chapter, Dark Eras: The Sundered World (Werewolf and Mage 5500-5000 BCE). At the birth of civilization, in the shadow of the Fall, the Awakened stand as champions and protectors of the agricultural villages spread across the Balkans. In a world without a Gauntlet, where Shadow and flesh mingle, the steady taming of the world by humanity conflicts with the half-spirit children of Father Wolf.

TODAYβS REASON TO CELEBRATE: I always heard that “March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb”. Except, now I hear that in the folklore of my wife’s almost-Amish people, their saying reverses the lion and the lamb. Which makes no sense to me. Does your culture have a saying for how March changes in the course of the month? Love to hear it, and meanwhile, Spring is on its way!
Really glad to see another Night Horrors on the horizon. I’m sure the Descent one will be wicked.
I got my Exalted book (s’gorgeous) and like hearing the news about the schedule, too.
But I’m really hoping to see some Forsaken stuff pop up on the radar. Even if it’s just the online supplement stuff.
I am also checking every week in the hope for some Forsaken love. The wolf must hunt!
Same here.
So there is no news on the horizon?
Where’s the love?
Getting a bit restless here for WtF..
Said it before, and I’ll say it again. What we publish has nothing to do with how much we love the line. There are, what, a dozen gamelines for Chronicles of Darkness alone. It is simply impossible for every line to get a new book even once a year, nevermind in years when we are doing second editions (which take up more bandwidth). To try and compensate, we are doing projects like Dark Eras, or the upcoming Crossover Chronicle, so that each line gets something each year that adds to their setting. Beyond that, we put books on the schedule based on pitches from our devs and writers, and arrange those releases in a way that make sense each year. Sometimes any given game line won’t have a new book release that year because of the way the schedule comes together. All very dry stuff, I know, and all very much apart from how much we love a line.
These Exalted news are superb, and they make me really look forward to the revitalization and new releases for the line.
Really excited to see Minton and Vance as devs, as they’ve continuously been excellent in community feedback this edition. Holden and Morke may not be devs anymore, but still anticipating their writing for the line too!
Couple personal thoughts:
First, I hope for the best for Holden and John. Their work is why we have Exalted as a living line at all and I hope they are still able to contribute something to the game in the future ven if not in a development capacity.
Second, congrats to Vance and Eric in their nwe positions. I am fully confident they can continue on expanding the setting and world that the previous dev were doing and that we’ll get awesome stuff from it.
Finally, I like the upcoming schedule and what books we’re promised here. My only personal gripe is that the titles for the monthly-books (Antagonists and Bestiary) kind of suck. I hope that the final compiled PDF has a more well, Exaltedy, name.
And stuff.
It’s pretty common to use a boring placeholder name for projects, particularly early in the process. Cool names often come later.
Congrats to Eric and Robert! You guys are awesome dudes and have been super helpful in posting around on the forums. Your work on the corebook was great, and I have to say that the news about Ex3 Antagonists and the Bestiary are very exciting for me as a fan of that kind of stuff.
The preview is fantastic too. Hurray for Exalted!
I… can’t actually think of a comment on the Exalted staff changes that doesn’t sound weird one way or another, but thanks to the power of imagination, you can pretend I did!
On a related topic, are Ex3: Antagonists and Ex3: Bestiary going to follow the same subscription model as OPP used way back when with CoCD: Autochthonia?
Not currently the plan, but we can take a look at the idea. Thanks-
As I understand it you should beware the ides of march? Keep a look out for sudden rains of backstabbings!
I’m sad to hear that Morke and Shearer are stepping down. But yeah, sometimes Real Life comes along and throws wrenches into the cogs. Will they still be involved in Ex3 in some respect?
And good luck to the new developers! Trying to keep the ravenous hordes of Exalted fans happy with updates? Yeesh! Gird your loins and minds fellas!
So does recontracted mean the old piece was tossed and a new artist is being hired to do it?
More likely the art never materialized.
Well I could definitely see that causing a problem.
I just wanted to express my thanks to all who contributed to Exalted.
Question for Rich: Now that everything is shipping, is there a chance of making the Exalted map a POD poster on Redbubble or somewhere else?
There’s still a fair bit of shipping I expect we’ll need doing, with lost and mis-addressed books, and damages. But after those get pretty well resolved and the vast majority of backers have their rewards, then we’ll get the map out in various forms.
It’s great to hear about the Exalted progress (and antagonists is something I really really needed for my games because of my lack of proficiency with the system). Also nice to see DtD Night Horrors.
Glad to hear it!
Another DTD Book! Yay!
TAKE MY MONEY!
OKAY!
Thank you to John and Holden for all their hard (in more ways than one) work on Ex3!
Congrats to Vance and Minton on the new job!
So Antagonists and Bestiary are new books you’re adding to the schedule, and will be released in installments, between now and Arms in the summer (and then probably beyond until DB and The Realm)? I’m just trying to make sure I have everything clear.
Oh, and I got my Exalted book and map this week. Gorgeous! I don’t even want to touch it, it’s so pretty.
That’s right, the two new books are intended to be releasing material for as long as it makes sense to do so, and on a parallel track, Arms and DB and The Realm will be being written and developed and all the creation processes. We might get two small books worth of sections done and combine them and call it a day, or we might keep going. We’ll have to see, but we’ll be putting out sections each month for at least as long as it takes to get Arms up on DriveThru in PDF and PoD versions.
The update says that Exalted is finishing shipping, but I still don’t have a shipping notice, and requests for update on Kickstarter through private message has gone unanswered. What can we do to get more info?
The update says they are *planning to finish* shipping, not that shipping has finished. And that any problematic orders would be handled in April.
FWIW, I got my shipping notice after the update went out.
Correct! Thank you!
I am very excited for these news about Exalted. I do hope Morke and Holden will still play a huge part in Exalted going forward, but I believe this is for the best. Eric and Robert have proven themselves many times over and I have complete trust in their vision and in their ability to make great material.
What is the status on C20 in relation to being released to the backers for proofing ? is it at that stage yet ?
If I recall correctly, proofing is the final stage before release. There’s always a bit of a back and forth with proofing, so it’s probably not going to drop next week. Soon though!
If I bought a copy of the C20 PDF on backerkit will I get the draft version of the PDF with the rest of the kick starter people?
Unfortunately, those are two separate systems, and only actual backers of the KS get the Backer PDFs. You should, however, get your copy of the finished PDF before we put it on sale to the general public.
This proofing is between the developer, designer, and art director. Then we need to submit to WW for approval.
Whoa! Trinity hopped ahead of Scion! We have a race on our hands!
Hmmm, not really. We still need to run the Trinity Continuum Kickstarter later this year. So getting the text done is just the start!
Where r the Ex 3 Books Shipping from?
US, Canada, the UK.
K thx can’t wait to get it
I’m really pleased to see Exalted start to find its legs again. While I know the previous team must be disappointed to have to step aside, the book they’ve left is a gorgeous legacy.
Looks like C20 is on the near horizon too, which is great to see. I need to knuckle down on finishing the Dark Eras Companion so that I’m ready for that arriving.
Thanks, Rich for your regular updates and all the hard work from you and your staff. Look forward to hearing more about the upcoming release of Beckett’s Jyhad Diary =)
We’re getting there. The combination of the Stretch Goal additional sections and working with the new White Wolf to add some material we all think complements the original text has really extended this part of the content creation. But everyone is incredibly excited by Beckett’s JD, and we hope you all will be too!
Yeah! A DtD Night Horrors!!!
I was wondering: is there any new projects for Demon the Descent planned ? Or is the line “completed” ?
Also: What about Deviants ? When can we expect news ?
You mean besides the Demon Night Horrors book? π
“V20 Dark Ages Companion β Recontracting two halfs. Layout is about a third of the way done.”
Two halfs-whats? Does this mean two half-page pieces of art?
On that subject, it might be interesting for one of your Monday Meeting posts to discuss the art process some day. Unless that’s already been done? I have a terrible memory.
Two half page pieces of art are being recontracted.
I want to echo what a lot of others have said: Thank you John and Holder for the wonderful foundation of Ex3. Without your vision and work, we would not have the wonderful game we have.
And congratulations Eric and Vance! I’m super excited to see what comes of the Exalted line in the future and having interacted with you through the forums, don’t think that it could be in better hands!
It seems like the Prince’s Gambit campaign had its top funding-tiers sell out very quickly, which may indicate for similar future campaigns that you may want to consider lifting the donation ceiling, since there are a few eccentric rich people who kickstart lots of money for projects they like (for instance https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/14293468/homestuck-adventure-game/description ), …although it should be noted of course that bigger rewards carry with them their own set of complex logistical and budgetary challenges for production and/or delivery of swag. Keep up the good work OP.
Exactly, there are trade-offs to the crazy uber-reward options and one thing is definitely how they complicate things. With Prince’s Gambit, our first card game KS, we are limited by the design, our intention to get this out asap, and not wanting this one to get too complicated. That being said, I am looking at some specific upper tier rewards to add, and we’ll be thinking of them for any new card game we KS.
Well ask and you’ll get, so following the spirit of excitement.
EX3: YYYEEEAAHHHHHHHH!!!, LUNARS, LUNARS, LUNARS HURRA. (Drooling profusibly).
Richt TAKE MY MONEY, and ty. π
Just wondering what kind of art shenanigans might occur at the layout stage to require recontracting. I assumed all art would be available and accounted for in order for a book to progress at this stage. Perhaps some pieces turning out the really wrong size or not fitting the developer’s requirements?
Another possibility is that the designer is working on the layout without all the art being in, and leaving gaps for late pieces…and then the artist doesn’t deliver the art.
Dark Ages Companion finally out from art direction!!!
THE DARK GODS HAVE HEARD ME!!!!!
For a while I thought that the multiple cookies I sacrificed where for nothing.(everyone knows that dark evil gods love cookies… I mean… Who doesn’t?)
