Yes, this week I’m talking about the Trinity Continuum: Anima Kickstarter and in particular, the second setting you get all the info to play in within TC: Anima: the most popular MMO in the world, Terra Surge!
But first, I’m racing to get this blog finished early this week because in all the holiday hullabaloo, we realized that our huge Cyber Monday Sale at DriveThruRPG and affiliated sites actually ends here on this very Monday, so I want to get this blog out earlier than normal this week so you all get a chance to pop over to that sale!
Links below in the Sales part of the Blurbs!
So, trying to keep it brief!
Anyway, back to the amazing fantasy MMO Terra Surge. We released a teaser on the Kickstarter for it over the holiday, and folks are very excited just with that – but tomorrow, Tuesday, we’ll be releasing the full text for it to TC: Anima Kickstarter backers, so we expect all sorts of commentary and excitement after that hits!
And why not? It’s a fantasy game within a cyberpunk game that is our first specific fantasy-genre use of the Storypath rules so far AND it was written with a real eye towards all the MMOs that our team have played and worked every since I killed rats outside the gates of Freeport in EverQuest.
For me, I’m a class/”race” junkie. I gotta create alts and experience all the starting areas and the variant quests. So, while I have no idea how the AI actually in Terra Surge would respond to me, I do know that I really enjoyed reading through all the class and peoples that we have in the book. Not your standard Tolkienesque options, but different and well-thought-out ones, nevertheless.
As always, don’t take it from me alone, though. Here’s some thoughts about Terra Surge from Eddy Webb, TC: Anima dev:
I’m excited that tomorrow people will start seeing the MMO side of Anima. The cyberpunk revolution side is also fantastic, but I think the video-game-within-a-tabletop-RPG element is so distinctive and cool.
And the chapter on Synestia, the world of the MMO Terra Surge, is not just a typical fantasy background. It also has notes like how different game expansions changed the game world, and the various impacts that players had on how the world evolved and changed. For example, here’s a list of the expansions:
Terra Surge (2075) is the base game, and it introduced players across the globe to the world of Synestia and its peoples.
Underbarren (2078) gave players access to Synestia’s literal dark side, implementing several new dungeons.
Azure Winds (2081) expanded sea travel and introduced many new islands to trade with or conquer. It also introduced the Jahat, the latest antagonist faction.
That’s all part of the history of the fantasy world, and the book goes into more detail about how each expansion adds to and changes the game world the players interact with, in a way that’s different from the “eternal day one” of many other tabletop RPG settings. It’s the kind of experience only video gamers typically have, and I’m excited to see how others dig it.
And here’s Dixie Cochran, who wrote the chapter that delves into the game’s setting:
One of my favorite things about Terra Surge is thinking about how it works behind the scenes. The Narrators, specifically, are a concept I really latched on to from Dominic’s original material. Though they’ve changed slightly since their original concept, the base is still there. While there are human designers who make decisions about new patches, updates, peoples, etc. on Terra Surge (we’re not coming for your job quite yet, Eddy!), the Narrators are responsible for the day-to-day running of the game and its quests.
I like the idea that they’re each responsible for specifics when it comes to worldbuilding and quest generation, and that they can collaborate in areas, much like we do when making an RPG book! I don’t go into too much detail about how sentient (or sapient?) they might be, as I think it’s fun to define that sort of thing at the table, but I imagine them procedurally generating millions of stories per day, tweaked just to satisfy the person playing.
Now, that means that quests might not turn out how you think, based on literary tropes or the like, because the Narrators know what you subconsciously gravitate toward! They don’t just have access to your Terra Surge play data, but anything else you’ve accessed through Glass, including social media, streaming data, and correspondence (I mean, this is probably a very good case of why you should read the Terms and Conditions of a game, right?) So maybe you think you like a challenging game, but you really love that moment when you get overpowered and can just mow things down.
Or maybe you want a romance woven in there, or to meet other people like you (real and fictional!), or you want to retire to a peaceful countryside, having righted the wrongs in your town. The Narrators know what you want, and their whole job is to give it to you.
I also like thinking about what this looks like in a raiding or group scenario, as everyone’s playstyles are slightly compromised to make the best story for the whole group. Yes, some raids and giant monsters and other scenarios are probably standardized across the board, but a group of three friends questing together will end up with an interesting mixture tailored to them.
Terra Surge really is the perfect fantasy TTRPG, as it tailors itself to each player while also having events and changes that tie the whole world together. Also, though myriad other games and virtual worlds certainly exist on Glass, I don’t think anyone else has figured out how to replicate the Narrators or what makes them so special.
Yep, there’s a lot going on there, and even the core TC: Anima book will only be hitting the parts you need to play right now – there is still so much to reveal. Which we will much earlier if we can get to the Stretch Goals that produce a book about this very subject: expanding Terra Surge. Which we can only do by bringing in more backers and pledges – so please do try and get the word out, especially in places where you might not see much about our games!
Every bit helps!
More Quick Bits From the Meeting!
On Wednesday, we’re doing something different and offering a Pre-Order page as our sales item of the week. In this case, the Pre-Order for Trinity Continuum: Assassins! We had such success with our Pre-Order for M20 Rich Bastard’s Guide, that we really felt that a book like TC: Assassins would be a fantastic follow-up!
Here is some official sounding stuff all about that!:
This Wednesday we’ll be setting up the pre-order on DriveThruRPG along
with the first couple of chapters of the TC: Assassins manuscript. Then
every two weeks or so we’ll be adding more sections of the manuscript,
which you’ll get automatically added to your Library on DriveThruRPG.
Once the PDF has gone through layout we’ll update DriveThruRPG with
the Advance PDF. Pre-order customers will get a chance to look at the
complete Advance PDF for at least a week before it is released for
sale to non pre-order customers.
We’ll have an errata feedback form available the same as other Advance
PDFs we’ve released in the past and we appreciate everyone who sends
in those comments.
Also, from Eddy, here is the description of the chapters:
While Trinity Continuum Core Rulebook is necessary to play a game of
TC: Assassins, this book contains many additions and adjustments to the
core ruleset to better shape a chronicle set in the world of shadow.
The following chapters detail these additions.
Chapter One: Stepping into Shadow discusses the hidden world of the
Assassins, its history and structure as well as notable figures from
the past and present.
Chapter Two: The Shadow World details the Societies of Shadow.
Characters can belong to any of the five introduced in this chapter,
but players and Storyguides are welcome to invent their own.
Chapter Three: Character Creation details the process by which players
create their unique Assassins. This chapter contains brand new paths
and Edges suitable for playing in the shadow world, as well as all-new
Skill Tricks and cutting-edge gear.
Chapter Four: Systems and Drama explains the rules specific to playing
TC: Assassins chronicles. In this chapter Storyguides will also find a
collection of deadly antagonists to challenge the players’ characters.
Chapter Five: Masteries are new, special abilities that only Assassins
can access. They grant characters supernatural power over acts of
violence, hunting, stalking, and killing.
Chapter Six: The Killing Art provides advice for Storyguides running
Assassins games. It also includes a few sample scenarios, and how to
properly pace one’s way through a series of linked assassinations.
If you haven’t realized it yet, Trinity Continuum: Assassins is a very different look at our Continuum! (Or is it? See art below:)
We put up the templates last week, so this week the gang and I double-checked on whether the TC:Aberrant Community Content section of the Storypath Nexus was ready for Wednesday, and it should be good to go. If you have a project ready, you can place it before it opens so it is ready Wednesday. If you have issues making that happen, please contact theonyxpath@gmail.com for assistance.
Not saying it’s good to be there right when the site opens, but it could be!
Because we’re talking in our meetings about these projects, and more, but you aren’t because they aren’t visible on the progress screen, we agreed that it’s better that you all know that there are some projects we are working on that we don’t put up on the weekly progress report. For example, there are 4 projects in First Draft that aren’t visible yet.
There are a lot of reasons why we might not have gone public with a project for a bit, like it may be a license that we have been told not to announce ahead of a certain time the owner wants to hit, or we may be working with another company who is doing part of the project but hasn’t handed their part off to us yet, or we might be the ones who want to control the timing of making an announcement so it hits with the biggest hoopla.
Hoopla, I tells ya!
Finally, speaking of hoopla, in January it’ll be Onyx Path‘s 10 year anniversary! We’ve got some plans already happening to make it a fun time for all of us, but right now – is there anything you want us to do to celebrate? What would you enjoy, or think would be appropriate for us to do/create/sell in honor of thriving for ten years in this biz? Throw your thoughts in the comments and we’ll talk…
Whatever we do do, heh-heh, our goal is to make it a blast for all of our community. After all, we wouldn’t be here ten years in if not for all of you who have supported our wacky plans for:
Many Worlds, One Path!

Today’s Reason to Celebrate!
Today was the birthday in 1976 of Chadwick Boseman, whose too short career delivered several riveting and complex performances, with his portrayal of T’Challa of Wakanda – the Black Panther – clearly one near and dear to nerd hearts everywhere. We can only imagine the amazing work he would have done with more time.
Anniversary idea: graphics discussing the many games
For instance, you could do a “How to choose an OP game” flowchart
Or, a scatter plot of campyserious vs sci-fifantasy
Or, venn diagrams
OR, ask employees and/or fans to create their own and vote for their favorites
Wow, those are really interesting ideas. Totally not something I would have thought about, but I do love me some graphics and it’d be nice to see other people enjoy them, too. Thanks!
So what is the Exalted 3e Adversaries of the Righteous? Is that similar to Hundred Devils Night Parade or something else?
My group is eagerly awaiting the Exigents book, and seeing it awaiting KS art notes has really lit a fire under them.
basically yeah. It’s more on human antags and NPCs, mortal or otherwise.
It is similar in that it was also a monthly release in sections, like 100 Devils, but less monsters and more antagonists and organizations. Very cool to hear that your group is excited- have they seen the Exigents preview teaser from last week?
That’s exactly what made them so excited. That plus the little bit they know about it from Exalted Essence has the GM almost salivating in anticipation.
Awesome- that is great to hear! Dixie was just discussing when to do another teaser for Exigents, so…
Totally should be today. Or tomorrow. This week at the very least.
What would be cool for the anniversary? More Exalted stuff.
You’re gonna love next year!
I hope so, but that’s also what they said last year. ¬.¬
Did you miss Exalted Essence KS? 😉
That being said, now I really look forward to next year. Thanks Richt.
Thank you, Daniel! And as I look at what we have ready and on the cusp, yep, it’s going to be glorious!
I’m reminded of the time, early in the protracted September of 1993, when the legendary James “Kibo” Parry was preparing to release his new and allegedly improved .sig to Usenet and warned all kibologists: “Do not disrupt my carefully controlled pattern of hype, or YOU WILL BE PUT IN A BOX WITH BILL GATES AND SHAKEN.”
If Bill Gates is shaken, does spare change in the millions fall out of his pockets? Because then I might be OK with that punishment. 😀
I personally think depending on who owns the art in your licensed games. To have an art book with one piece of art from each book you guys have ever made as opp.
So a commemorative art book going through the years? That’s pretty cool, and yep, we’d have to figure out the rights issues, but we’ll add it to the possibilities – thanks!
I’ve a question (or three) regarding the TC: Assassins pre-order:
Will there be a print on demand – option?
Will those books be hardcover (if there is)?
and…
Will they be the same format TC: Core, Aeon, Aberrant etc. CFs used (if there’s hardcover PoD).
Yes, like all of our products. Yes. TC: Assassins is designed to be a part of the Trinity Continuum game line in both content and design/size/shape etc. Hope that covers your questions, but sound off if you have more!
Thx, that covers my questions. Meet you in the shadows..
Its nice to see there is still stuff being made for WTA20 its one of my favorite games and its been a while since ive gotten anything new for it. Im really looking forward to the apocalyptic record and senario book. <3
Yes, it was super of Paradox to give us the OK to do one more batch of W20 projects – we still had some stuff we wanted to howl about. So glad you’re looking forward to all of them!
Scooped up that TC Assassins preorder super quick!
Thanks, Casey!
