The Month of Horrors is Here. [Monday Meeting Notes]

While I was gone, it looks like the Onyx Path gang successfully started the Halloween Month of Nightmares special treats! We’ve had a lot of fun pulling excerpts from our various Onyx Path books from the last several years, and hope you’re enjoying all the different projects that we’re choosing. I thought that the above full page piece of art from V20 Ghouls had the right feel for the holiday, so I included it today.

Are there any projects you didn’t know about that the excerpts got you interested in trying out or recommending to friends? What about the fiction excerpts? Those are often the best because you get a feel for the writing style as well as the information. Anything we’ve posted so far been particularly captivating?

Let me know here in the comments if you get a chance, as we’re really interested in seeing if these daily doses of darkness are letting folks in on projects they might have missed!

If you haven’t noticed: I have returned from Rome. Well, Milan actually. It might have been Marc Antony who returned from Rome, actually. After the last few weeks, things are blurry.

A more in-depth look at my time at Ovino X con in Milan can be found here: but suffice it to say that during the proceedings I got to show a few folks some of the Onyx Path brochures and we left a big batch of them at the venue, which did have RPGs as a draw as well as card games. I also got to meet with Alessandro, who sometimes comments on this blog, and he was just super to chat with. And, besides wearing a Pugmire t-shirt one day, I also sketched this on a MtG playmat when asked to draw something from my latest project:

Today, we talked about how many projects moved on apace while I was gone as well, and Mirthful Mike has the V20 Lore of the Clans backer PDF almost ready to go out, with several other projects very close to completion. Fast Eddy lived up to his nickname and moved both Pugmire’s Early Access Materials and V20 Lore of the Bloodlines forward, as well. He has also been compiling data and comments on VtM 4th Edition, and we talked today about several of the thoughts on Humanity folks added during the blog discussion.

I noted to Eddy a few comments from the V20 Lore of the Clans survey, as I gathered up the backers’ credits names for Mirthful Mike, that indicated a concern that Vampire 4th Edition would obliterate the V20 books we’re still creating. By and large, we think that will come down to your individual table. With V20 written as taking place in a time frame without Gehenna having occurred, and V4th being after some sort of Gehenna event did happen, we’re thinking that V20 elements can easily be pulled into a V4th Chronicle if the Storyteller wants to include them. Just like any 1st, 2nd, or Revised parts of the setting.

If all goes according to plan, we should go live with the W20 Shattered Dreams Kickstarter at 12 noon Eastern US time on Tuesday, October 20th. Hope you’ll join us if you’re a W20 or Changing Breeds fan, as these chapters detail the main causes, battles, and aftermaths of the War of Rage and similar conflicts through Garou history.

Since I’m still fighting off some sort of combination of con and airline crud, I’m calling this blog for today. Talk to you all very soon!

We’ve started doing special blogs every day this month to celebrate October as the Month of Nightmares. Look for more snippets from various projects and notes from the developers on why they bits are their favorites and what went into them, as well as special sales. These will happen all October leading up to Halloween – because you know that’s our favorite holiday!

  • Mage: the Awakening Second – Art in progress.
  • Promethean: the Created Second – Contracted.

In Layout

  • Lore of the Clans – Got comments back from Eddy and page xxs… so I’ll be wrapping that up this week.
  • Dreams of Avarice – working.
  • Beast: The Primordial – Doing page xxs… there are a lot of those to fill in.
  • Demon STG –  Starting on that once I get NWoD 2 into 2nd proof. Should be quick.
  • Guide to the Black Hand – Should start on the layout end of this week… maybe beginning of next week.

  • NWoD 2 – Doing up all the first round corrections and getting that back into proofing.
  • M20 How Do You Do That ?!? – Phil compiling 2nd proof notes.
  • Ex 3 Anthology – Awaiting updated text file.
  • Ex 3 core book – From RichT: Maria still inputting revised Pg XXs after we discovered a page number shift in the book mid-way through due to Maria actually reducing the page count by two pages. Once she’s done we send to CCP for approval of changes- one of their required changes was having all the Pg XXs filled in before they’d give final approval, which is why we’ve been fixated on the XXs. After their OK, backer PDFs will be sent out. Holden also mentioned that his OCD has slowed down his end of things as he has had to restart the process repeatedly to confirm his already assigned XX page numbers.

At Press

  • V20DA Cover samples are good… so those should cranking along now.
  • M20 – Deluxe files for both interior and two covers at printer.

Special- projects on hold in the art and production area until an external factor is resolved

  • Dark Eras – Expanded text from the KS has to get through the dev stages above.
  • Wraith 20 – Can’t go further until art notes come in.
  • Pentex Employee Indoctrination Manual – Some added and amended text needs to come in.

TODAY’S REASON TO DRINK: The stop and start bucking bronco of a ride back to PA from JFK airport during rush hour.

Night Horrors? For Beast? I approve of this!

    1. richt Avatar

      So did I! 😉

  2. Monkipi Avatar

To be clear: is Holden still checking the pages and inputting them, or are they all in Maria’s hands now?

    1. richt Avatar

All of Holden’s XXs are with Maria.

  3. Tiresias Avatar

    So much happening with Beast!

M20 screen still at the printers?

impatiently awaiting so many things. After strainfully listening to the youtube gencon panel a suggestion for NWoD 2e, a section in the storytelling part of the book on when to break the rules.

Also sections on how to tell mysteries, and keeping the world seeming largely normal human (on this note as writing it might be interesting to pose Slashers and Serial Killers as Antagonists 2/3 paragraphs).

Feels like I’ve been waiting forever for V20 Ghouls – any eta ideas as to when it might hit? It’s becoming increasingly relevant to my group!! 🙂

    1. Lubricus Avatar

Sure you don’t mean “revenant”? 😀

  7. Phaolan Avatar

First off, that image from V20 Ghouls is excellent, and the file says it’s a Bratovich, which makes it MORE excellent for me. In our Dark Ages/Final Nights/Gehenna chronicle (over a decade of ‘real world’ time covering nearly a millennium of vampire history), the two most memorable ghouls were the brothers Istvan and Fedor Bratovich. They didn’t survive the Anarch Revolt, alas, as they were gruesomely killed by Istvan’s sister-and-daughter, Mischa, as her first act after becoming one of the Tzimisce…

As for the Month of Nightmares, I was inspired to buy Hunter: Mortal Remains after the blurb, putting to truth my notion that it seemed ‘about twice as expensive’ as I wanted to pay for it. I also found the Scarred Lands discussion very illuminating. Dag! Now I’m interested in some kind of D20 game? Thanks a lot, Onyx Path! XP

    1. richt Avatar

Very much our pleasure. 🙂 Thanks for the info, more cool project snippets coming the rest of the month.

  8. jerrytheleaper Avatar

what exactly “contracted” means for promethean 2ed?

    1. itsthatperson Avatar

“Contracted” refers to the contracts for art pieces. For Promethean 2nd, it means the art the devs want for the book has been planned, noted, and now the artists have been commissioned for these pieces. This is the beginning of the art formation process.

While it’s not a huge difference, this event has served as the kick in the pants I needed to actually pick up the fiction anthologies, so I hope they all make it in at some point.

Fantastic! That an anecdote that helps us, thanks!

I have a question about Beast.
There is a chance the pdf will be released to the backers before November?.
Thanks again for the good time at the Ovino Rich! I have really enjoyed it, also I hope someday to be able to go at GenCon and meet all of you.

    1. richt Avatar

Gonna have to make that a “maybe” on Beast. We still need the backer names from the Survey I’ll be sending out this week. Great to see you at OvinoX, my man!

The countdown to Halloween snippets have been a joy to read. I particularly want to read Mortal Remains now for antagonist inspiration. Currently, with the help of Damnation City amongst other works, I am creating a rough draft for a 2E MtAw game based in Boston (but may wait to see the presumed Tucson setting when reased.) And that’s all I’ve to say!

    1. richt Avatar

Well, thanks for that! Hope you find some more inspirational snippets as the month progresses. Thanks!

  12. UnsilentMajority Avatar

Looking forward to the Lore of the Clans PDF, and the next Werewolf KS going up next week. Very excited for that, actually.

Also, in terms of the month of horrors promotion; for me, I already purchased just about all of the items that have gone up for sale. The only one I don’t own is the Exalted one, and I’m not an Exalted player. Purely World of Darkness(Classic and New) for me.

But I DO love the idea. And it gives me something to look forward to every single day from you guys.

    1. richt Avatar

If the month serves only to amuse and entertain long term buyers of our stuff, then it has still done a good thing. With our schedule, it sometimes is hard to just throw items up there for the sheer fun of them. So glad you’re looking forward to them every day. Thanks!

  13. Atavist Avatar

Woo! A new Night Horrors, Dark Eras Companion moved up, and finally the Pack has advanced! Now to wait for someone to let us know what’s in the Pack book.

I really like the Month of Horrors thing, but I can’t say it’s inspired me to get anything, because I already have most of the products mentioned. But I have been keeping track of the articles, and am definitely going to keep an eye on further Scarred Lands news.

    1. richt Avatar

Fantastic! For me, any extra sales aren’t about the cash – although that is nice – but are about somebody getting something they hadn’t had a chance to get ahold of before. In the same way, reminding folks who already have the books we’re previewing that we did all these, and have many different game worlds coming, like Scarred Lands, is the promotion doing what we want to have happen.

  14. Full Time GM Avatar
    Full Time GM

Yes! Mage 2nd Edition steps a little closer to release. Just a few more pretty pictures and it’ll be in my hands.

  15. ThreefoldTent Avatar

Is there a chance we can get a blog post about whats coming in The Pack? Its the thing on the list I want to know the most!

    1. richt Avatar

That’s up to the Dev. We’ll see what we can work out.

  16. Terence Avatar

Just curious that photo with the priest about to be chopped off, is that from V20 Ghouls…yah that guy with the axe reminds me of the Bratovitch revenant.

    1. richt Avatar

Aren’t you reading my well-honed mighty meanderings? Fie! It’s right there: “I thought that the above full page piece of art from V20 Ghouls had the right feel for the holiday, so I included it today.” And yes, it is a Bratovitch. 🙂

      1. Terence Avatar

        haha sorry …

Is Changeling the Dreaming 20th Anniversary Kickstarter scheduled for late November? As a backer of Wraith20, I’d like to suggest less short story “stretch goals” this time. The insane number of short story stretch goals in Wraith20 diminished it.

    1. richt Avatar

Everybody has different bits that they enjoy about the Stretch Goals. Some people really groove on the fiction, others love gamebook stuff. We have to appeal to a wide group of interests.

  18. Beckett Avatar

Would it be possible to get a sort of update in Wrath 20th? It seems to have been on hold for some time.

I recall, what seems like months ago receiving an email on it (cursed again), but nothing since then. I do not mean to sound like I’m being impatient, I just mean it would be nice to know it wasn’t forgotten, and some sort of progress is being made in whatever issues seems to be holding it up.

    1. richt Avatar

Just so we’re clear, Wraith is still being written and developed, it’s only the work Mirthful Mike can do on it, the art and design, that is “on hold”. Rich Dansky continues to pull the text together and that has been noted in backer Updates.

  19. Beckett Avatar

I’d much rather it be given the time it needs than rushed.

  20. Terence Avatar

haha, looks like I got the kickstarter backer PDF of Lore of the Clans, dat was fast and I am impressed, great stuff…anyways, will black hand guide and ghouls be coming out at the same time?

  21. Gyre Avatar

Any word on upcoming Storypath teasers? It’s looks like a really sharp system, and I wanna take it for a spin.

  22. Terence Avatar

    A question on Ghoul V20….

Will the Kairoun Brotherhood Assamite revenant family be discussed in the book, they are mentioned in some detail in Lore of the Clans.

    1. Matt-M-McElroy Avatar

Yes they will be getting a full two page spread along with the rest of the Revenant families.

I just got into WoD in the past year, and I’ve been spending tons of time (and money) browsing DTRPG. I want to say I love this year’s WtF2E: it’s both an improvement on WtF and the poorly organized GMC rules update. I’m grasping a lot more of the subtleties of GMC in its context, though it might just be a print vs pdf thing, as it’s mostly copy-paste.

Although I’ve been interested in Promethean for a while, I’m holding out until 2nd Ed because WtF2E is JUST THAT GOOD. So yeah guys, take your time and make it badass.
