Woof woof, bark, bark, WOOHOO! [Monday Meeting Notes]

antattackprog

So we launched a Kickstarter for Fast Eddy Webb’s Pugmire fantasy game of uplifted dogs last Thursday. We were hoping to get enough interest that we’d fund the creation of the core book, based on the Early Access version that Eddy was using at MidWinter Con, and to get it traditionally printed so we could get some of these out into game stores. Eddy estimated we’d fund our pretty modest $15,000 goal in about four days. I was in that state I get into before we launch a KS where I am sure it will be our first KS to fail to fund. Or at least that we’ll squeak by with funding right at the end.

We funded in an hour.

Today, as I write this, we have 1630 backers, $102,198 in pledges, 35 days to go, and have run past six Stretch Goals like a dog let off the leash.

We got a write-up on the Nerdist web site here: http://nerdist.com/theres-an-rpg-called-pugmire-about-medieval-fantasy-dogs/

It is so very gratifying to see so many people excited about Pugmire!

Oh sure, there are some folks uptight because Pugmire isn’t the angst-filled majesty that is the World of Darkness, but we expected that. In fact, it is important to us that a project like Pugmire can have its place in Onyx Path‘s release schedule alongside the World of Darkness, Chronicles of Darkness, and Exalted.

It shows, as Joshua Alan Doetsch phrased it, ” A deliciousness of range”.

Which is important to us here at the Path, which is why you might have noticed we have a variety of game worlds that we create for. As creators, it is vital for us to be able to concentrate on one world and then be able to pull back, regroup our creative energy, and focus on another very different project that stretches the creative muscles in different ways.

For Fast Eddy and I, this was exactly how working on Pugmire affected us. It was the pause that refreshes in between the many, many projects we were working on. For us, as friends and collaborators for years, it’s a great project that lets us work together on creating a game world, and one where we have only ourselves to decide what works or doesn’t.

But that’s just us as wacky creative guys making (and often eating) mud-pies.

In fact, there are many other reasons why Pugmire is important to Onyx Path:

  1. It’s our first new game to make it to the public.
  2. It’s our first “creator-owned” partnership project to make it to the public.
  3. It’s one of our first experiments in reconnecting with game stores and getting a traditionally printed book onto their shelves.
  4. It’s our first Kickstarter with a dice set included in the Reward Tiers.
  5. It’s our first Kickstarter with…well, you’ll see if you follow the Stretch Goals, but there are SGs in this KS that we could only do with a project we owned.
  6. It’s our first game specifically designed so that you can play it with your adult group and if you want to, you can play it with your kids.

Besides just making a really fun game and world, all of these reasons enable Onyx Path to grow along the lines I was mentioning in my posts at the end of last year, and as we try out these options, our efforts towards the White Wolf game lines are infused with more ideas and energy, and our efforts towards further Onyx Path owned projects like Scion and the Trinity Continuum also can be increased because our creators see that there are audiences out there beyond what we’ve touched on these last four years.

So, yeah, pretty important stuff behind the scenes, and a fun game world of dogs with swords & sorcery upfront where it should be.

If you’ve already pledged, then thanks for coming on walkies with us: you are a Good Dog. If you are still sniffing around the Kickstarter, I hope you’ll sit up and take notice of all we’re trying to do with this and give it a taste: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/pugmire-fantasy-tabletop-rpg

If you do, I promise I’ll stop with the doggie puns.

TODAY’S REASON TO DRINK: Arf arf, bow wow, wowser!

  1. Is the “Layout” section in some sort of order, i.e. Demon Storyteller’s Guide is in front in Mage is in the back?

I admit I mostly ask because I’m still clinging to my Mage-hype.

    Reply
    • It’s in half double reverse order. You take the list, divide it into thirds, and reverse each third. Then flip it. Hope that helps! (Seriously, no, no order except what Mirthful Mike may have in mind).

  2. Congratulations. While this type of game isn’t exactly my cup of tea, as I’m not big on sword & sorcery games; I support the endeavor and know a lot of gamers who are obsessed with their pets and dorky enough to play this once a week with their friends. It doesn’t surprise me that this (the game) will turn into a huge hit. I’ll keep my eyes on the growth, but stick to writing/narrating Chronicles of Darkness stories.

  3. I’m suddenly curious what the difference is between an Advance PDF and a final. I assumed the Advance was basically going “We’re pretty much done, but there may be some spelling mistakes and visual errors. If you’re okay with taking a chance, buy it now and let us know if there’s any problems.”, but Demon’s still listed as being in layout.

So what’s the deal with Advance PDFs?

  4. And as I do not mentioned in previous post – make Monarchies of Mau game/supplement and I will join Pugmire-ish folk also! I’m cat person, really wanted for years for good cat fantasy game to play. 😉

  5. I am confused that it says Chronicles of Darkness Core is in layout, yet you are selling the pdf… Is there going to be something new with this book?

    Reply
    • CofD was available as an Advance PDF, which we got errata for from our eagle-eyed community. That was input and then the index was created – because you don’t want to do the index before all the corrections because the page numbers of entries might change when corrections are made. Both corrections and laying out the index take place in layout and the final PDF is made and then the PoD printing files.

  6. Congrats on the great Kickstarters this month guys: Pugmire looks like a fun adventure game that I’m already trying to drum up some interest for.

  7. Just wanted to say congrats to everyone on how well Pugmire is doing! Eddy’s enthusiasm for it was obvious when he talked about it at GenCon and its fun to see that translated into a game people are equally excited about picking up.

Its great to watch the next step in OP’s future unfolding as you guys more forward with your own properties. SUPER excited for the Trinity kickstarter, whenever that comes down the line. Great times to be an Onyx Path fan!

  8. I noticed that the V20 Black Hand book is missing from this week’s schedule. Could you please tell us what the status of that book is? Thanks!

  9. I notice Truth Beyond Paradox in proofing – would this be a Mage the Awakening project I’ve missed, or is it an Ascension one?

    • This is the all new M20 fiction anthology from the M20 Kickstarter. Very close to publishing, but not so sure that I announced it for Weds. and we have to get backers their links too.

  10. What happened to the V20 Black Hand book?

It’s been in Layout stage for weeks with the comment “Working on it” (what does that mean?) but now i can’t find it.

Also, V20 Ghouls has been in Post Editing Development for a long while now, what’s the holdup?

    • I know you mentioned that Rich D. may be putting together another hunk of text for the backers. I am definitely with you. He should absolutely take his time. I’ve been where he is and I am perfectly happy with the Wraith book taking a while longer all things considered. It’s going to be a magnificent text if it arrives in 8 months or 24.

  11. 1 – Sorry I missed out last week, but a believe happy belated birthday wishes are in order. Hope the year treats you kindly.

2 – Pugmire looks awesome. In the introduction text, I really like the little touches of descriptions such as turning once on herself even during dialogue because she’s exited. The facts that abilities gained are called tricks and the like, as simple as it sounds, sold me entirely. Reading it will be a delight.

3 – Tribebook: White Howler. Anyone reading this who worked on that book: Thank you. Having ended my Technocrate chronicle I am now turning back towards my one true love (Werewolf) and can finally take the time to read this book. So far I am enjoying it tremendously. I’ve already got my players lined up for my short campaign where a lone pack actually goes back into Caledonia a few months after the howlers fell to find out exactly what happened. They are in for a horribly good time.

  12. I realize that you’ve only just collected errata and making edits takes time, which is in short supply when you’re juggling so many projects, especially those so close to the finish line, but it feels a little… disingenuous to have Dreams of Avarice listed as ‘At Press’ when it’s available at neither Drivethrufiction or Drivethrurpg.

    Reply
    • “At Press” doesn’t mean “On Sale”, so no, I don’t think it is disingenuous. In this case “At Press” means awaiting OK for the PoD version.

      Reply
    • Thanks! Like I noted in the blog, there are a lot of good reasons for all of our community to be happy about Pugmire doing well – it opens a lot of possibilities for all of our projects, not just for itself.

  13. So I have a question that’s related to something that doesn’t come up much.

I’ve noticed the first draft portion of the queue has been sort of emptying out over the past several months, and a few of the larger titles like Mage Book of Secrets has been in the queue for a while (It’s huge so that’s in no way a complaint, just an observation that it may move soon). Can you say anything about which items from the longer timeline are likely to refill the beginning of the pipe in the near future?

    Reply
    • Either when we announce them as a group later, or when they start to be written and show up in the First Draft stage, but otherwise only if we let something slip elsewhere. 🙂

      Reply
  14. So… Reading in between the lines that Dreams of Avarice is listed as At Press, and that I just received an email saying DSTG has been update, and that Dreams and DSTG finished errata at the same time… Are those of us peons who didn’t back the Mummy Kickstarter able to pick it up on Wedensday? Or did I error in my logic?

    Reply
    • At Press in this case means that Mirthful Mike is prepping the PoD versions which need approval from the printer and me before we can offer up final PDF and PoD versions for sale. Won’t be ready by Weds., or I’d have announced it in the BLURBS! section below. Thanks!
