Boo!
Matthew Dawkins here! I imagine I look pretty damn frightening after a week in Indianapolis for Gen Con. My tie may have loosened or top button come undone… Still, my purpose guest blogging isn’t to scare you but to enthuse you, because…
[drumroll]
It’s been a long time coming, I know, and I need to thank all of you for your great patience, but it’s finally here:
Wraith: The Oblivion 20th Anniversary Edition will be available in PDF and print on DriveThruRPG this week! Check back on our blog soon for the link to purchase a copy!
Before I get onto the hype train, I should also mention the deluxe version of the book. Now the text and art is completely final, the files have been sent to the producers responsible for assembling our deluxe copies. I ordered one as well, so don’t worry, I’m eager for mine as well. In the meantime however, please enjoy the finished version of the PDF or order a print on demand version. I feel confident it’s the best 20th Anniversary game yet.
I’ve long held a strong love for Wraith. It may be my favourite of all the World of Darkness lines. I recall in one of my conversations with developer extraordinaire, Richard Dansky, that I mentioned it’s so difficult to find players for it, which was something that always disheartened me. He disagreed and said “The number of people who have approached me saying they’d love to play but could never find a group could have formed hundreds of groups by now.”
What he said was true. Or at least, it is now. With the internet, livestreaming, forum play, and similar, you can play Wraith with a whole host of ghosts. If your local tabletop group doesn’t want to play (and they should want to play), you’ve no reason to succumb to Oblivion. Instead, post in our forum or on one of the many World of Darkness Facebook groups that you’re open to running a game or looking to play one. With private messaging enabled in any of those forums, you have an excellent way for your Shadow to whisper threats and secrets to you, or their player can put their dialogue in different colours, or italicised.
Wraith was always a game ahead of its time. Mechanics such as the Shadow, a world as bleak of Stygia, and tone as heavy as death, struggled to find an audience in the 1990s. In these days, with fantastic games like Vampire: The Requiem 2e, Promethean: The Created 2e, Monsterhearts, Bluebeard’s Bride, and all kinds of other indie press and innovative mainstream games, it finally finds its place.
Another thing Richard said to me was he believed Wraith was the most hopeful of the World of Darkness games. It’s not a game about death: That’s already happened. It’s a game about finding peace and moving on. I think we’re ready to move on from waiting for this game to arrive. It’s here. Let’s now arrange to play it!
Many Worlds, One Path!

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: Gen Con’s over! Time to celebrate by taking a long, long nap.
That Scarlet Empress and shy Mnemon cosplay is heart melting.
Looks like you folks had a great showing at Gencon this year. I wish I could have been there. Speaking of Wraith, is The Book of Oblivion going to get a merits and flaws section since it didn’t make it into the main Wr20 book?
I am also curious about the plan for merits and flaws in Wraith. Could you share if there has been any discussion of if they will be included in future books?
There will not be any Merits or Flaws in Book of Oblivion, as it’s primarily an antagonist book.
Bummer. Well, here’s hoping the Wraith goodness doesn’t end with the currently announced projects.
Good for you, Wraith 20. Congrats on your imminent and hard fought release, Onyx Path.
I had hoped to hear more news of CofD and WoD beyond V5, perhaps even a bit more for lines Onyx Path owns like Scarred Lands, but I see many titles nearing release and that’s always a positive.
We deliberately focused on the new announcements, and then answered questions about folks’ specific line or book questions. Go ahead and ask any of those you might have here. Thanks!
From chatting with the Darker Days crew, it sounded like there was some discussion of Mummy 2e? Anything major beyond what was in the brochure?
Oh, cool. I’m mainly interested in new products for CofD. Was there anything announced we hadn’t heard of yet, whether for existing or new lines?
I ran Wraith for a year back in the day.I also ran a couple crossover characters and two games that fizzled after a couple sessions.
I mentioned it at the booth this weekend…I also said I ddint know anyone else who ran it successfully.
Sorry to hear you haven’t had luck with Wraith in the past!
Any idea when the audio or video for the Whats up panels will be going up?
I believe the Darker Days crew recorded them.
Eddy and maybe Matthew were also recording the audio. We’re hoping a combined version of both panels will cover a bunch of what happened in both.
Oooooooo Wraith. nice~
Wraith’s been a long time coming. I’ve never played it, but I sure as heck am happy for all the people who do that this week has finally arrived!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for releasing Wraith at last!
Since I wasn’t on Gencon, and unfortunately I didn’t have any friends that could’ve attended the painel so I ask here
Could one of the Deviant developers reveal me what the Clades are?
Soo…what is this Distopia Rising?
It started out as a larp. Now onyx path publishing is turning into a role-playing game!
OK..what is the setting, or other information about it? This is kind of the first I heard of it.
Some information is in our January announcement. Other information appears in our 2018 brochure.
