Beckett is Live! Or Something Like That Because He is a Vampire…[Monday Meeting Notes]

Beckett Logo on Background

So first off, thanks to everybody who sent me get well messages. Feeling much better, and your salutations really did help. Although I really couldn’t appreciate them until after we launched the Deluxe Beckett’s Jyhad Diary Kickstarter, as that was something I just had to get done – fever or no fever.

But launch we did last Thursday, and we’re already past 90% of the way to funding! We’re hoping to get backer feedback in two ways with this: 1) voting on which chapter to reveal next, and 2) picking which of three Stretch Goal options we do next. Unlike the Dark Eras KS where we had some options that never got the votes to go into the book, for Beckett we’re going to offer the next three Stretch Goals that we will definitely do if the goal amount is passed, but our voters decide which order we do them in.

So pop by and check out the fun: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/deluxe-v20-becketts-jyhad-diary

I’ve talked a lot over the years about my interest in Onyx Path exploring the ways that gamers get their games, as well as how to make our game worlds more accessible. Like how we deliberately created a whole passel of fiction anthologies because some people either prefer, or only have the opportunity, to enjoy our worlds through fiction.

Of course, the potential is bigger than that, though. And we already have projects that are moving to that space, but our bandwidth is all about making our PDF/PoD/Deluxe game books. Which means we need to find somebody who can take care of these projects that extend our media possibilities. Call it an Extended Media Position. (For now.)

Which means I’m going to list what we are looking for in terms of what we expect as the starting job needs for a freelance contract gig, which has the potential to evolve into an in-house employee position. Contract terms to be determined in discussion. It is definitely something that does not require relocation.

The person who is accepted for this position would need to already be able to accomplish the following:

  • 1) ePub and Mobi electronic versions of our books: Manage the creation or personally generate the ePub (reflowable and fixed) and Mobi version files of our game books, place both fiction and game book ePub/Mobi versions into the appropriate marketplaces, monitor and follow up.
  • 2) Roll20 and other online tabletop gaming: Modify and pull and assemble graphics and post correctly at such sites and DriveThruRPG.com, as well. Conceptualize and direct creation of projects for use in the on-line tabletop RPG gaming space.
  • 3) App Creation: Supervise App creation via external studios, generate and develop project ideas, place into sales channels and monitor and follow-up.

As you can see, it’s a position that requires wearing a lot of hats, which is what we do here. If you think the above list is a piece of cake, want to work with a fun group of miscreants, and help us move our amazing games and settings into new frontiers, please send me an email to:

richt+EMP@theonyxpath.com

Include your thoughts about such a position, and your qualifications. Links to relevant info, and small attachments with your CV or similar are both OK. Every single person who can do the above things is encouraged to apply.

Reaching out to me in any way besides the comments here, including my regular email, will be ignored because if I had the time to deal with more messages, I’d be trying to accomplish some of the extended media stuff myself. 😉

Once again, sorry we got some Mummy: the Curse fans all excited waiting for the Curse of the Blue Nile fiction anthology to go on sale last Wednesday and then didn’t put it on sale. Mighty Matt McElroy and I discovered an issue with the book mere moments before we were going to flick the DTRPG switch. My huge thanks to Matt for the catch, as I was clearly still fighting my cold.

Yeah, that’s it: I was fighting my cold.

And not very, very dumb.

We need to get a new PoD proof back from the printer before we can sell it, so expect it to go on sale for reals in July.

This is your tale. This is Exalted. What legends will they tell of your deeds?

EX3

Exalted 3rd Edition includes:

  • Combat System – Fight with a new cinematic combat engine, primed to deliver dynamic, exciting, and easily resolved battles between heroes, gods, and armies.

  1. Glad to hear it looks like you’re expanding! I know mobi and epub variants will be really useful and people have been asking for roll20 and other digital product stuff for a while.

    Good luck with the applications!

  2. A quick question about BtP: Mortal Remains. Is this a separate book or a chapter that’s going to be “editted in” to the existing Hunter: Mortal Remains book?

    Reply
    • Neither. Like the “Mirrors: Infinite Macabre” and “Mirrors: Bleeding Edge” PDFs available, it’s extra material for Hunter’s Mortal Remains, but available as a separate PDF.

  3. Is there anything holding up Prometheans? There hasn’t been much of any info in a while, and they are my favorite splat in the WoD line, I’m super excited for the CofD take on them and the days are crawling by while I wait. Plus my ST is also kinda waiting for them, I think he has some plans for them coming up. ^_^

    Reply
    • I went back a few weeks ago and checked how long Mage stayed in layout to compare to Promethean and it was in layout from mid Jan to mid April. Promethean first entered layout on the April 25th MMMN. So it’s only at like the 2 month mark. I’m just checking from the outside, but Promethean is still a month shy of where Mage was. At first I was thinking maybe the CoD transition impacted it, but that all happened before Mage went into layout. So I would assume that only impacted it’s text phases. If Promethean left layout now that would be astounding turnaround for one of the core books. I mean I would be thrilled, but super shocked.

      Reply
    • It is going through the layout process which involves a back and forth of PDF proofs from graphic designer to developer and back again. The bigger the book and/or if it is a core book means more time spent reviewing and fixing, reviewing and fixing, etc.

      Reply
    • Man there is so much M20 stuff on the extended timeline already, and Book of Secrets is a beast of a stretch goal book. I can’t imagine seeing any more M20 stuff on the timeline until at least next years GenCon. (I wouldn’t complain mind you, I just can’t imagine it).

I already have a Victorian Mage arc planned for my current chronicle (we’re currently an SC game). I think that chronicle is going to have to go on hold in a year or so and we’ll move to Exalted until VMage comes out. I know that’s a ways down the road as is.

  4. Dark Eras Companion has been in art direction for quite a while since the Cleopatra chapter was pulled and presumably redone. Could one get a more clarifying sense of how far along it is?

    Reply
    • Not really, no. Mirthful Mike adds whatever he notes he feels comfortable adding, or has the time to include. Right now, he’s pretty busy.

  5. More fiction, novels and books like Beckett’s Jyhad Diary that deal with the lore and the metaplot of WoD would definitely be great.

Now, in the case of White Wolf, I’m waiting for their WoD projects on other media (particularly, anything visual) to let other people can learn about WoD, too.

    Reply
    • Has the WoD slot machine gone live yet? I’m pretty curious to see how the story elements are included. But besides that, I’m looking forward to some upcoming announcements too.

  6. Just a note of thanks here. I’ve been involved in the Beast Kickstarter from the start, and it’s been nothing short of a class act from beginning to end. Looking forward to receiving the Prestige Edition, which looks to be very, very soon indeed. 🙂

(Now if Secrets of the Covenants can turn that last corner….)

  7. These three books:
Arms of the Chosen (Exalted 3rd Edition)
    The Realm (Exalted 3rd Edition)
    Dragon-Blooded (Exalted 3rd Edition)
have been in second draft for a year now. Can you give us any hope about their eventual completion?

    Reply
    • I don’t question their eventual completion of course, but I’d also be interested in hearing more about these projects.

      Reply
    • I’m expecting a project by project in-depth EX3 report from Holden later this week. Overall, to answer your last thought, they will of course be completed and available for sale.

      Reply
      • I had this cockamamie notion that, since Dragon-Blooded is in between Beckett’s Jyhad Diary and Scion Second Edition in the production pipeline, its Kickstarter could come in between them on the calendar — starting in early August, for instance. How plausible is this?

        Reply
        • I’m going to hopefully sidestep anything I might say that sounds like I’m crushing your beautiful optimistic dreams, because I really don’t want to. So instead of your direct questions, let me give you the general situation: I believe we need to Kickstart Dragon Blooded only after we have a completed manuscript. So until the Devs present that, I’m not going to plan on a KS for it. Not only do we actually learn from our missteps, but particularly for our Exalted community, we have to prove that we have learned better ways to do things than we did with the EX3 Kickstarter campaign. But once we do have the DB manuscript, we have all sorts of great plans for the DB KS.

          Reply
        • Also: August is Gen Con. We normally leave that as a hole in our Kickstarter schedule, because running a Kickstarter and doing Gen Con at the same time is for people slightly more masochistic than us.

  8. I’m curious about the ePub/Mobi format for game books. I have never seen a book with the kind of comprehensive layout that gaming books have converted to ebook in any method other than whole image pages, or entering the text as text with the images sort of scattered throughout. I’ve always wished I could keep my game books on my Google bookshelf, but I’ve been aware that would require either either a very inefficient format like my ebook of Chicken Qaballah (which is just scanned into ebook format), or loosing the beauty of the books. So I’m curious what the vision is for using these formats given their limitations, or if providing guidance on what the best way to do that would be part of the role filled by this new freelancer?

    Reply
    • We did a version of a game book ePub for V20 Anarchs Unbound, I believe, that was bundled with the PDF for backers at least. It is an entirely additional layout process, so while we proved that we could create something that looks sufficiently good and like our books, we haven’t had the bandwidth to go any further. One of the reasons to bring in someone to assist these efforts.

      Reply
  9. Re: ePUB/Mobi books

    YES PLEASE!!

I really wish more RPGs would move toward this format. I do a lot of e-reading, and while the PDFs are beautiful there are a lot of situations where they’re less than ideal.

I’d also love to see the old novels converted over — reading those things in PDF is a pain, especially on a small screen (like my phone, where I do most of my reading). I mean, I’m glad to have them — they’re far better than nothing! — but it really feels clunky instead of comfortable when you’re used to e true ebook experience.

    Reply
    • Right, PDFs were originally not even designed for use by regular readers, they were created to send files to the printer and folks ran with posting them. So they are still valid as a way to read your game books, but they aren’t designed specifically for such a role even though there have been a lot of upgrades over the years. A lot of our audience are good with PDFs, which we certainly are glad about, but part of moving into creating ePub versions (which I’m using generically here) is to get our games into the kinds of formats people like yourself are using to access their entertainment.

  10. I’ve gotten all of the M20 core books and few of the vampire supplements as Deluxe. So tempted to throw in with Beckett as well. If this KS does well, is there thoughts to extend this sort of idea other gamelines? (Mage!)

Sorry to ask again on the MM comments. Is there a timetable on getting PoD for Adventure! from DriveThruRPG?

    Reply
    • It really depends on how well Beckett goes. We are all about porting a format or idea from one line to another, so long as it makes sense for the line of course, so if something seems to work for one line then we’re open to trying something similar.

No timetable for an Adventure! PoD right now.

  11. I am more than a little interested in the job proposal. Especially parts 2 and 3. I would need to learn how to handle part 1 however. When do you need this by?

Also, sorry but I need to know more. Is it expected that applicants already have a job at the same time (as many of your freelancers do) or is this a full time job?

    Reply
    • Basically, until we fill the role, and possibly after.

As a freelance gig, we could have multiple people doing similar things, but first I need one person who can cover all of this. Again, as a freelance gig, you could do enough work for you to feel like it is all you need to do, but you’d have to be a significant self-starter and be able to rapidly deliver projects for sale. Those sales being what justifies the amount we pay you.

      Reply
      • Of course. That makes a lot of sense.

If I am being honest, I was already working on two pitch documents for projects I wanted to send to WWP. This being said, if OP itself is open to projects of that nature, and someone to help bring them to terms, I could not be more on board.

Let me try to get the one that’s almost complete together and send it along with my application.

  13. Beckett’s Jyhad Diary seems a bit . . . pricey, for a setting book. It’s almost the same price as a Deluxe/Prestige(old) World of Darkness corebook, and more than a nWoD/Chronicles of Darkness prestige edition. Is there something special about it?

  16. Hey, I would love to see a re-release of the Clan novels in ebook format. I know the original files are gone but would it be that hard to recruit some fans to record the original novels PDF into a Word format?

Also, I loved the Jhyad write-up for Chicago. Could we possibly have a full book detailing the city in 2017? A lot has changed in Chicago and it’d be cool to have the Primogen-run city expanded on.

  17. Great posting, really looking forward to all DA Companion book!

I personally would like to try my hand at the freelance work. I’m very experienced in all forms electronic development. I just wrote some software last week to make a macro maker for Roll20. As well as I do custom PDFs and I could certainly do ePub and mobi versions!

An for app development I would be incredibly stoked to get something official for fans up and running. As it stands I’d be able to do Android but I’ve not done a development of apps for iOS platform. Aside from that all of the current listings are right up my alley!

    • That would be a call made by the new White Wolf Publishing about their IPs, and we have not yet decided on how far we want to take the community created projects aspects of things for our own game lines. Although, I am reasonably sure we will be creating some sort of Approved by Onyx Path brand for community created Scion Second Edition projects.
